Student Lighting Design Competition 2011

The 2011 "Design with Light" competition is changing formats! This year, in cooperation with the Philadelphia area IALD and LIGHTFAIR International, IES Philadelphia Section is sponsoring a student lighting design competition open nationally to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning and majoring in one of the following fields: lighting/illumination design, architecture, engineering, and interior design.
The winning designs will be presented in the Lighting Education Lounge at LIGHTFAIR International 2011, scheduled at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, May 17-19 in Philadelphia. The winning team will receive a $1000 award and second place will receive $500. Participants should organize into groups of no more than 4 students and work cooperatively to develop submissions.
Each team will be challenged to come up with an original, unique and creative lighting design for a provided architectural project. In addition, each team will design one custom, decorative luminaire to be used in the design. The final design submission will include a video, no more than 10 minutes in length, detailing the design process and approach, as well as a presentation board, no more than 30"x42", to illustrate the design. Each design will be reviewed and judged by a panel of professionals in the lighting industry. The judges will be represented by Philadelphia area IALD and IES members.
Participants should submit a group entrance form by February 28th, 2011. Competition materials, including architectural plans, elevations, and renderings will be emailed to groups on March 1st, 2011. Final submissions are due on Friday, April 15th, 2011.
In addition to the cash prizes, the winning team will also be provided with a trip to LIGHTFAIR International in Philadelphia to present their design during the conference. Accommodations, travel, and full student conference packages will be awarded to all members of the winning team courtesy of LIGHTFAIR and our manufacturer sponsors:
